Gavin Ambrose & Paul Harris’ (published by the swiss AVA) highly visual layout book provides a great overview of layout design. I decided to buy it for my final project in college, a magazine layout redesign. It was a good decision.

The book covers everything from the use of white space to the transformation and positioning of images. It brings together examples of layout, both contemporary and historic, from around the world. The contest divided into six parts: historical context, principles, grids and formations, objects on a page, application, reference. It’s beautifully illustrated and packed with photos and samples of work from designers.
If you decide to buy it you can get some great deals on Amazon, if you can’t wait (like me), try one of the Borders bookshop.
